Diary - 2005 Sugaring Season

Back to the Diary Page

March 28 - April 1

That is that.  As predicted, the season around here came to a screeching halt.  We haven't had a freezing night in about 7 days.  Torrential rain this weekend took care of the remaining snow.  Very short season for us this year.

March 26 - 27

Yikes!!  The sap flowed these two days.  Too pooped after Easter today to boil but have about 500 gallons of sap to take care of tomorrow.  Rain is forecast for tomorrow PM and Tuesday.  That will change the complexion of things.  Nights are forecast to be around 30 after that.  The problem can be that the nights never really get down below freezing.  The sap stays up in the tree and we wait........

March 21 - 25

Things slowed down a bit this week.  Have boiled twice and will probably boil tomorrow.  Having some stainless steel stovepipe made for the exhaust end of the arch.  The old galvanized pipe has just about had it.  Again, no big runs, just consistent.  Some folks are having a "Maple Weekend" this weekend.  Not us.  We are getting together with family for Easter.

There is still a couple of feet of snow in the woods, but it is melting.  If you go early in the morning you can walk on the snow.  Not so in the afternoon.

March 15 - 20

Boiled three times this week.  Small but consistent runs.  Had our Maple Sunday today (3/20).  It was nice to see every one.  The official Maple Sunday is next week which happens to also be Easter Sunday.  We won't be open on Easter but will be having a great meal with family and friends.

The snow has melted quite a lot this week but there is still plenty in the woods.  This week has brought a lot of songbirds back.  Makes being in the woods a lot more fun.  Although not really a songbird, my favorite is the chickadee...

March 11 - 14

We waited out some more nasty weather and another 10 inches of snow and tapped Sunday and Monday.  Tapped almost all on snowshoes, which is something we don't usually have to do here. Makes for tired legs, that's for sure......    The weather conditions still don't look the best, but I have a feeling that when it breaks it will warm up quickly and put a quick end to the 2005 season.  I expect to boil for the first time towards the end of this week.

March 1 - 10

What is going on???? Still not tapped yet.  Just too cold.  I'm looking at this weekend but the forecast is for sleet and then 8 more inches of snow.  We are usually boiling by now.  Got a feeling that this may be a short season.

February 9 - 28

Got lines repaired on President's Day weekend.  What happened to Washington's Birthday weekend anyway??  Still cold with more snow than we had all of last year.  It's got to break soon.

February 1 - 8

Cold and nasty with snow.  Hope to be in the Woods next weekend to repair some lines that I didn't get to last Fall.
